Acrylic on paper, 19" x 25", painted in 1998

THE WINDJAMMER was one of a series of three-mast iron ships, each designed for speed on the long haul shipping goods between England and India. Built in Glasgow, Scotland in 1874, it measured 239 feet long. Nicknamed the Windjammer, the ship officially sailed under the name the Mairi Bhan, Gaelic for "the Bonnie Mary." On December 7, 1912, the Windjammer left the port of Kralendijk, Bonaire, hitting the reef at the deserted northern end of the island. With the Windjammer lodged on the reef, the captain and crew abandoned the ship, carrying all that they could potentially sell. The bowsprit points forward across the sand, with all its rigging intact and hanging. On the sand lie the ship's two remaining masts, attached and entangled in their cabling. Like the spiny back of a giant reptile, the sharp profile of the keel traces a long line in the white sand. Schools of jacks swim the length of the wreck. The rib-like skeleton of the hull, covered with sponges and black coral, is like the door to a haunted house. The Windjammer is truly breathtaking.

Dominique has spent his life driven by his two passions—the sea and his art. Born in Paris, France in 1946, he studied painting at l'Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts de Paris from 1966-68. His most important body of work was created on board the Calypso as underwater illustrator and writer for l'Equipe Cousteau. From 1982 to 1997, he created 17 animated books for children inspired by Jacques Cousteau's expeditions around the world.

Since the death of Cousteau, Dominique has returned to his true passion of painting underwater sealife and shipwrecks on canvas. Dominique has explored the most spectacular shipwrecks of the world and has captured them on canvas. His sealife and coral reef acrylic series captures the world’s most beautiful reefs.
